Alberto Salazar (2:08:51) and Charlotte Teske of West Germany (2:29:33) are the winners of the Boston Marathon.

April 19, 1982

Salazar, a Wayland native, beats Dick Beardsley by two seconds after racing alongside one another for the final nine miles of the race in what comes to be called “The Duel in the Sun.” Beardsley was bumped by a press bus in Kenmore Square and forced to go around a police motorcycle road on Ring Road, but never uses those mishaps as an excuse. He subsequently maintains, “I caught up to Alberto and I just got outkicked.”
